Eros and Anteros, two of the Greek gods of love. Eros is the more famous one, being the god of all things love and desire, while Anteros takes the domain of mutual or returned love. Depending on which ancient Greek you're listening to, they're either twins or Eros is the older brother. Either way, sources agree that they look alike except that Anteros has longer hair and "plumed" butterfly wings instead of bird wings like Eros.

The most popular story says that Aphrodite noticed that Eros (her son, in that version) was lonely, so she gave him a brother to cheer him up, all with the moral being that love can't be happy unless it's returned.

In any case, Anteros is generally the more more "mature" of the two. Eros had a habit of being a mischievous and occasionally cruel and a bit of a brat. Which is why he's got his brother by the neck.

:iconwavesofchaos: <-- This is all his fault. We started talking about Anteros's wings, so then I had to look into him, and then I couldn't resist drawing him. And, of course, Eros insisted on hopping into the picture, too.

I had the idea to create a story based on the myth of Cupid (Eros) and Psyche and Anteros is one of the characters.
I believe these two had to other brothers as well. The four of them were called the Erotes (the gods of love) and their names and roles were as follows:
Eros-God of Love and Intercourse
Anteros-God of Love Returned
Himeros-God of Lust
Pothos-God of Love Unreturned a.k.a. One-Sided

See, I've never heard of Anteros having the long hair and butterfly wings, and being given to Eros, it's always Himerus I hear about with that story

That's one of the interesting (and sometimes frustrating) things about Greek mythology: there are so many variations on everything! For example, some sources say Eros and Anteros are twins, while others say that Eros is older, and still others say that Anteros was created from the love between Poseidon and one of his lovers and isn't even related to the other Erotes. It's basically up to you which you want to go with. ^^

Yeeaaa. Love Greek mythology but they couldn't get their shit straight xD

Like I heard about the Hermaphroditus being merged with a nymph story for the first time last night, I always read it was born a Hermaphrodite :O
