Inktober 2015 - Black Dogs

Description

First off, I've decided to jump on the InkTober train, which is basically a challenge to do one drawing in ink every day in October. I've thought about doing it in the past, but this year finally feels like a good time to give it a go. For more about the origins and "rules" of InkTober, check out The InkTober Initiative.

Second, I've heard today is also Black Dog Day, which basically tries to raise awareness of the plight of black shelter pets, who tend to have lower adoption rates and higher euthanasia rates due to superstition, the issues involved in getting darker colored pets to photograph well, and other such reasons. Google it to find out more.

So, it seemed fitting to kick off InkTober with my very own black "dog," Ani! This is my version of the Egyptian god of the dead/embalming/various other things' canine form. Technically, he's considered a jackal, but close enough for this.

The entire Black Plague was brought on by the Superstition of black animals being evil. The Pope declared that all cats were evil, because they all had been breeding with the black ones, and declared a genocide against cats, which led to massive rat populations, who carried fleas that spread the plague like wild fire.

Not much happened when they went after dogs, but they only went after the black ones, and not all.
