Meet Kiraz. He first showed up in some sketches about a year ago, nameless and with just a vague idea of being part of Trev's back story... and has since told me his name and firmly inserted himself into my world of Medan. So, when he showed up again in the last set of sketches in such a sweet pose, I figured he was a good candidate for a full blown illustration.
Besides, it was a good opportunity for some more background practice. I think I'm getting better.
As for Kiraz himself, his exact story is still forming, but he seems to be an outlaw with aspirations of freedom fighting. The centaurs of Medan used to be a proud nomadic people, but under Areli rule, most have settled into villages and the farming life. Nowadays, they're seen more as beasts of burden than the fierce and free people they used to be, and many denizens of Medan seem to think that's how it should be. Kiraz begs to differ.
He looks like a pretty awesome character! The pose is very dynamic and I like the concentration on his face. Good for him to defy everyone who thinks centaurs are beasts of burden! X3 My centaurs have a hard time too. Then again, they bring it upon themselves by attacking randon passers-by, so you can't really blame the humans.
Anyway, really cool pic and nice character! The background is really good too. ^^
I could learn some patience/background technique studying this. Main subjects, not a problem, just hate BG's. BTW, I'm a BIG Centaur fan. Cool character!

Thank you. ^_^ I hear ya on the backgrounds - I've still got a long ways to go, and it does take a lot of patience... but gotta learn them eventually! I'm glad you like it.

Wow, an appaloosa centaur! I have to admit, I've seen a lot of pcitures of centaurs in my time, but never an appaloosa. Especially with feathers around the hooves (yes, I know the terminology. I admit it, I was one of those annoying horse-crazy girls when I was younger. Still rather am, honestly).
Even beyond the central figure, I really like the background. The fallen dead tree that's halfway in the water, the scattering of leaves on the boulders. It's a lot of great details. Well done.

Thanks! I'm glad it all came off so well, particularly the background.
To be honest, I thought he was going to be a solid color (this is the first time I've done him in color), but then Kiraz was all, "Hey, no, I have MARKINGS!" And, well, he has sharp pointy things, so who am I to argue?

Man, they'd have hella reach with staffs! I went with the swords because they're good for when they don't have a whole lot of room to maneuver, but also great for slashing at a run.

... Now I am wondering what kind of close quarters fighting would suit a centaur best though...
Personally I'd choose a staff or something big and heavy for them to put their weight behind ^_^
